As a fourteen year old girl, it’s not easy for Max being the leader of the flock, and not just any flock of birds. This flock are six pretty normal looking human kids with one majorly important exception – they have wings.
Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman and Angel were brought up in a secret lab run by mad scientists who crafted Avian DNA into their bodies. For years they lived behind bars in cages until Jeb, one of the “Whitecoats” turned on the lab, helped the flock escape and kept them hidden safe in a house set high on a mountain. Now they’re flying free, apart from keeping out of range of their predators – the Erasers.
After Jeb’s sudden disappearance, the flock must resume life on their own. Soon they’re out on missions they have no choice but to take, ones which involve rescue, tracking down their long lost parents and possibly saving the world.
This fast paced fantasy- thriller should definitely be a permanent addition to your bookshelf. Patterson’s truly amazing writing style grasps attention instantly from the first page. Being his first young adult novel, I think Patterson has adjusted his style well for the intended audience. The description and detail are so well constructed that it’s easy to follow the story.
Each member of the flock is as strong a character as the other. They all hold incredibly different personalities but they come together beautifully.
The ending leaves you so thirsty for more, good thing Maximum Ride is an eight book series! If you haven’t come across Maximum Ride before now, then what have you been doing? Jump in and get flying because this is one amazing ride you don’t want to miss!
